That could be it. I have created a zfs storage pool and its possible the
shutdown issue started after this. Any idea if there is a bug against this
issue ?

I have had the same problem on snv_109. I use autofs to mount home directories
from a zpool. Last night I tried unmounting the home directory because of what
I read on another thread. init 5 worked like it is supposed to and the machine
powered off.
Log off as yourself.
Log in as root.
zfs
I have installed 2008.11 live CD and it is running fine for the most part
except when I shut down.
I am used to getting a bunch of shutdown messages, the last of which tells me
its OK to power off the system (or something like that). I think the server
even used to power down automatically.

Thanks, thats more or less what I was used to when shutting down.
My system never gets to the syncing filesystems message even if I leave to
for a long time.
And then if I press the power button quickly I get a message on the screen
along the lines of Power Button pressed twice command

Basically exactly the same thing.
I get a white screen and then this message:
Mar 16 23:08:27 osshsrvr syslogd: going down on signal 15
If I then press the power button quickly I get this message:
NOTICE: Power Button pressed 3 times, cancelling all requests
