I've just installed OpenSolaris and I have to admit that I'm a complete newbie
here, although I've already got quite some experience with the Linux world.
The first problem here is the speed of the system as a whole: it takes more
than 5 minutes to start and runs very, very slowly - it's quite a
2 GB. CPU is AMD Athlon64 x2, 1900MHz. So it should be quite fast...
I've noticed another thing: the startup hangs. I have to press some key (I've
only used Enter and Esc) several times to boot. However I don't have a clue
what's going on since there's that splash image. That orange moving line
How much memory does it have?
That seems to make a big difference IMHO.

When the system is running modify the GRUB menu.lst file that can be found at:
/rpool/boot/grub/menu.lst
Delete the following three lines:
-
splashimage /boot/solaris.xpm
foreground d25f00
background 115d93
Remove ,console=graphics from the end of the kernel
You'd probably be better off just trying it and see what happens. I would be
interested to know if it works out.

Same story once again...
Clean OpenSolaris 2008.11
According to the ZFS Admin guide
(http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5461/gechv?a=view), shareing a zfs
filesystem over iscsi is a two line command.
# zfs create -V 2g tank/volumes/v2
# zfs set shareiscsi=on tank/volumes/v2
# iscsitadm list
I tested installing vmtools in two versions of vmware workstation, 6.0.2 and
6.5.1, and ESXi 3.5u3, and met the problem. Pls get my results below.
For vmware wks 6.0.2:
1. There was no Xsession.d folder in system during installing vmtools.
2. Ctreted the folder, then asked me if create new
That's what I'm trying to do but I seriously can't find any help on how to
enable and make iscsi target work on opensolaris 2008.11. I've already posted
for help on that...
Anyway, what I was thinking was that if you manage to make this thing work,
then that system of three raidz'ed pools,
I have also seen very slow boot times in the initial install of
2008.11 - however, after my first use of the Update Manager, this
issue went away. YMMV.

Persevere until until you get it working.
I never thought I'd say this, but I think this is a better CIFS server
than Samba! :)
One trick that will help you a lot is using 'zfs set
sharesmb=name=[some_name] [pool]/[filesystem]' - this way you get nice
neat share names.

This just happened to me in virtualbox. It got stuck at 99% for a very long
time, but after like 20-30 minutes, it did complete. Have you tried leaving it
sit for a long time before killing it?

Try 'zpool import' when booted from the LiveCD to check for existing
pools. Please post your output.
Also, you can add a flag to the GRUB boot option to make your boot
verbose - this might help diagnose the hang:

I am also curious if pkg has the ability like apt-get/dpkg to download/install

If not, how should one keep opensolaris up to date? The old way (patch pack + 3
reboots)?

I think you're right about the CDROM drive. I thought it was a Pioneer, but
perhaps the guts are Sony.
The times in the two log files are totally disjoint. Since the two CDROM read

evidence of hard error, I don't
I've re-started the install, twice. It hangs on Set fdisk attrs. No

I think you want
'pkg install storage-server'

'man iscsitadm' is a good place to look after you get that installed.
