On the I think I should .. thread mention was made of MPlayer and how it was
better for OpenSolaris than VLC (which I unsuccessfully tried to build).
Anyway tried to build MPlayer
Running make I fail with
gcc -DHAVE_AV_CONFIG_H -I.. -I.. -Wundef -Wdisabled-optimization

I've compiled mplayer using the steps on a Sun blog without any problems and
used gcc.

I've submitted the patch to the MPlayer developers

Didn't have any problems using the steps in the link. Mplayer works great.

That link gives instructions for building MPlayer-1.0rc2. The MPlayer download
page describes that version as outdated, and recommends using a current
Subversion snapshot, which is what the original poster was trying to do.
If MPlayer-1.0rc2 is all you want, you might as well download the
The Blastwave install didn't work for me.

I wonder why - it worked for me. I just didn't like their version because it
doesn't have x264 encoding enabled.

I also tried Blastwave's Xine installation and it didn't work either.

I also couldn't get my 23 inch lcd monitor to display correctly using
opensolaris. When the monitor was connected to my laptop, the laptop wouldn't
even boot! When running I could connect the monitor and using xrandr it would
recognize it, but couldn't get the screen resolution right.
For the record, MPlayer works fine under OpenSolaris on my desktop machine with
my new 23 inch monitor, with absolutely no configuration required.
I've never been inclined to run osol on laptops though, because I think that's
overkill, but mostly because I want suspend and hibernation to work.
