If you have many large files, do XFS, ext3 is also fine.
On my personal experience, I had better results with large files using
reiserfs rather than XFS.

and it seems i have to have libgnomecanvas 2.14 and have 2.12 installed.
So i went to uninstall and then reinstall 2.14 and have a huge list of
dependencies. What is the easiest/best way to upgrade libgnomecanvas?

I searched the web for 2 packages (glibc*, and glibc-devel*) - I see
there are many versions out there, but this made me wonder about
something else.
If I install for example, glibc-2.3.3, must the accompanying glibc-devel
package be the same version (also 2.3.3) ?
