Just create one under /etc/init.d and softlink both the S and K script to it.
The one under /etc/init.d must accept stop and start as an argument and
do startup and shutdown accordingly. You can check out any script

I don't see any advantage of doing that?

I looked at the CA ARCServer and Legato a while ago.
I believe the CA ArcServer uses their own Oracle Agent. Thus you don't use RMAN, so
you can't do incremental backups at the block level etc. Which is the reason I didn't
go with CA.

You are not trying to backup a database on floppy disks are you?
You can compress it then use the "split" command to split into smaller
pieces and copy it on to each disk. Maybe even write a script to do
all this and share it with us. :)

Don't know how to change it to only 1 login attempt. But I would do a "select sysdate
from dual;"
after connect via sqlplus. This way if the 1st login failed, the SQL statement will
cause the next two
attemt fail as well and sqlplus will exit.

Hi All,
I am looking for opnion on using CA's TNG for monitoring Oracle. I have used BMC
Patrol before but never TNG.
If anyone has used or evaluated both products, please let me know what you think of it.

If each schema has it's own tablespace, then you can do Point In Time Tablespace
Recovery. If all schemas share tablespaces then that would be a problem.

Just curious, I can see putting the control file on a file system but I failed to see
how can you put
online redo logs on file system in OPS. Unless you are using distributed file system?

one node do instance recovery for the failed node?

A couple of years ago, no vendor has a distributed file system (one that
will let all nodes in a cluster to mount and access the same file system
simultaneously).
And that's why we had to use raw device. Maybe DG had it? So which vendor
has it then and who has it now?

No Oracle doesn't do commits for checkpoint, log switch or shutdown normal.
It will only commit data explicitliy (using the commit command) or implicitly (DDL).
SQL*PLUS by default auto commits for you if you just exit after doing some DML.
But you can turn that off.

Did you check your disk to make sure that's not where the corruption started.
There maybe some physical disk problem or file system problem. If you have
some bad blocks on your disk you need to fix them first.
