You can increase the SORT_AREA_SIZE for that particular session only.
Alter session set SORT_AREA_SIZE= ;
You don't have to change the init.ora just for rebuilding index.
But if index is large , I still prefer dropping and recreati

sorting to be done in memory rather on disk. This will
also help speed up the process.

This will have to be decided based on the key fields for the index. You will have to arrive at an approximate value and increase temp accordingly.

You can drop the index and recreate it again, it would be faster and would
need less space
