It's helped, but hasn't solved the problem. It doesn't crash right away,
but it eventually will hit a random point and the program dies.
Also, when the second window is open, it absolutely kills the
frame rate from 30 hz to about 10 hz.

Tried it both ways. I've found running in
debug mode on Linux hardly affects the
frame rate at all - on Windows it
takes a big hit.
