Yay Viv!
This is exactly as it really should be. We make a pretty big deal
about Open Space. My last client implored me not to talk about the
process, just to facilitate the meeting. I told him that's why I
offer a practice workshop: so we can talk about the process. I
assured him that I was t

I promised myself not to get snookered into this "givens" vortex
again, but, alas, my willpower is weak.
Taking Esther's point that it is easier to put everything on the
table when dealing with community issues, we still cannot deny the
spirit of Open Space, which, let's face it,
Hi Harrison:
Your question about the word "missile" gave me pause to ponder for a moment!
And, I know that I did mean missile. Here's why.
When you talked about the intense feelings that came up for you - that they
resulted in you allowing your fingers to do the walking - that resonated for
me.
Harrison, Esther--
For me, the two questions that need to be considered by the leaders of the
organization, pre-OS, are 1) what do they plan to do with the recommendations
from the OS, and 2) if there are conversations that need to continue on certain
topics, will teams have on-the-job time to mee

Joelle mentioned the work with the Washington State Arts Commission. They set
out to have a conversation about the arts across the state leading to a
strategic plan with broad support. They not only got that but fostered
conversations that never would have happened otherwise, sometimes
I tried for a while to integrate the practice of identifying givens
and developing conversation in the pre-meetings around these things.
The last time I did it, the conversation about the givens became so
large that the whole event was postponed indefinitely.
Since then, there was one case where g
Hi,
Reading your request reminded me of a workshop presented at the recent
conference of the National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation
(visit http://www.thataway.org/conference/index.html for more info) in
Denver, Colorado, USA. I didn't attend that particular workshop, but

As a long time "lurker" on the OSList, I've found that there have been very
few times when my interest and passion kicks in to the degree that I feel
inclined to respond. This is the one!

we will) I have to say with all si
Thanks Cathy for the kind words. . . but I am wondering. Was your use of the
word "missile" ("Your missile this morning was so great...") a typo,
Freudian slip, or did I really toss a bomb? Perhaps you intended "missive?"

I am not quite sure why the specification and definition of "Givens" should
have butted its way into my consciousness - but it did and frankly I was
rather surprised at the intensity of the feelings (thoughts) evoked. Anyhow,
I let my fingers do the walking and the following appeared on my screen.
