I have a number of basic static type websites and I just host them in an
Azure VM (old school!), it is much cheaper. My actual cloud app that is
doing a lot of work is hosted in Web Apps.

Like you, I have no VMs. I have no SQL DBs at the moment either. I have an
"App Service" to host each site and domain. My Subscription page just now
shows $30 for basic Small App

Do you have each website on its own machine or something?
I'm using web apps (not vms) for all my websites. $200 per month is plenty. I
have four websites, each with database (and dev slots with their own database)
as well as blob storage and some other stuff like AD. Granted they are not

In my spare time I'm attempting to replace the server that been sitting
under my desk for 17 years (not the same one!) with cloud services. I've
got 5 of my static web
I was actually starting to think this myself.
I have a vm on my Azure (mainly so we can browse the Internet as they have a
barbaric white listed proxy, but have a port open to azure) and I have it with
ssd's and 7gb or ram. Worked out the automation so it shuts down during non
working hours.
Yeah I have one of these as well. Rock solid.

Still loving my Dell E7440. Lightweight, and I fitted it with 16GB memory from
Crucial, 2TB EVO SSD, and an LTE-A internal modem from Sierra Wireless.
(Currently getting near 100MB/sec down and 45MB/sec up).
Great machine.

i5 is fine though I struggle a little with only 8 GB of ram. Ssd way more
important though.
My mac - or the current equivalent - I bought last year seems to have
jumped $1k which would have made it out of my bracket.

I'm sort of looking at this now. Since I have a powerful desktop at work I
can rdp from any piece of rubbish and still be productive. However for
offline access and dev power is still needed so I'm still debating.
I like the idea of a lightweight i5 Mac type device to be honest.

Just wondering, is it worth spending so much money on local computing?
I wonder how many people are now using Amazon or Azure as an option vs
buying best in the breed local computing power.
Is 8gb, i5 environment not enough?
