I'm having a difficult time playing a video file using VLC from
packman (on x86_64). I've had success on this same video file in
other distros (using vlc), so I know the player is capable with
similar libraries.
The video is an xvid + AC3 audio; ldd seems to confirm that nothing
is appears

anscheinend nicht die einzige. Bei der ZDF-Mediathek sind entweder die Farben
vertauscht oder es läuft bei dem aktuellsten Paket gar nichts mehr.

(-devel package ships *.cpp and *.o files, include files are under
%libdir).

adjustments to build properly on all our distros in Essential,
and also enabled libtar support.
Hence I had to package a few things only for SLE_11, SLE-11-SP2,
and sometimes for Evergreen_

I encountered a whole bunch of cross dependencies from libpostproc52,
libavutil51, libxine1-codecs...
So if I want to upgrade libavutil51 to the new version I will have to
uninstall libpostproc51 and if I do so libxine1-codecs is broken.

For Suse users one needs to install vlc-aout-pulse through Yast or zypper.

Am using Leap 42.1 and your repos ... installed vlc ..
The vlc menu is not usable, cause it is kept behind the video ... I
streched the vlc window horizontally that I can access the menu.
Does some someone see the same ?
Or is there already a fix as work in progress ?

Regarding the vlc rpms on packman and/or videolan.
I found this bug in the opensuse vlc rpm on videolan.
Description:
lirc support is enabled in the spec file, but it will not be included
in the build because the "buildrequired lirc-devel" is not included in
the specfile.

So here's the deal:
VLC (the package 'vlc') is missing the package 'vlc-aout-pulse' as
dependency.
'vlc-aout-pulse' is pulseaudio audio out for vlc.
Since opensuse uses pulseaudio by default, this is pretty bad.

I report the pb to vlc .
Summary : using hw accel (vaapi or vdpau) with vlc leads to a crash
Answer from vlc team : this is a libavcodec pb not a vlc pb .
