VRPN can handle a number of non-LIBUSB devices. It handles many
devices using the HID interface. It handles others using RS-232 or
native O/S interfaces. Depending on what device you need, you may or
may not need LIBUSB.

You can load PDB files directly into Paraview, and it will display
them. I've not tried loading sets of PDB files with sequential names
to view time series dynamics, but you could try that and see if it works.
