I tried to convert some wave files to mp3 using Nero. I'm not sure of
the version but it may be 5.5.
I got a message that my mp3 pro version had expired. there didn't seem to
be any alternative formats to mp3 pro. In the past though, I've had no
problems in converting.

I had the same experience. I didn't know about this command, but I guess I
don't need to know if it isn't going to work. I'm running OE with JAWS 6.0.
It could be JAWS 6 as I've found a few other things that aren't working
quite right.

No. MP3 files are already compressed. You expand them to get them to .WAV
files. Expanding doesn't add quality once it's removed during the mp3-ing
process.
