Can you set the SB Live to be the default sound card and get system sounds from it? If no, you may need to disable some Creative utilities in Msconfig. If you do get sound from the SB live you can get the internal sound card to be the default and set Winamp to use the SB Live. You want to

Ok, so could you not say tell Winamp from the output plug-ins section to use the external sound card directly and have Windows use the in-built speakers of the laptop as a default sound card for system sounds? That way JAWS or whatever should work just fine, giving sound through the in-built sound

Hi. Well, that's exactly what she wants to do, but as I said in my original post, all atempts to get the external sound card seem to be failing. It *does* show up in device manager, and Winamp does see it. She set it up so that her speech would come from her internal card on the laptop

Sounds to me that unless someone needs something specific 5.50 has to offer, one is best leaving well enough alone and remaining with 5.35. Good reason to maintain past versions of programs on hand just in case a newer version causes more problems than benefits. Audio List Help, Guidelines,
