most basic have more bells and whistles than most people can use or even
understand.

she died in 2000, but my mother was someone who was not tech-savvy, but was
tech-aware (she had a Mac PowerBook in the late 90s, but used it mainly as a
typewriter)
An iPhone is a simple and capable camera.

One of these is is probably most appropriate, if she doesn't want to use an
iPhone or Android. Ruggedized with a comprehensive auto mode is generally the
best for moms who aren't really all that photo interested.

I concur. A rugged compact camera is probably the best.

I agree about the rugged camera and would recommend the Pentax WG, which I own
(but I don't know anything about the other cameras listed on the link below).
Solid camera, fun to play with in the water, easy user interface. If that's
still too complicated, I'd also recommend a good phone camera
Thanks, all for the suggestions... I will look into a rugged compact,
they live at the beach, so water/weather resistance is important.
