A long time ago there was another total eclipse that tracked over
eastern NC. I did the pin-hole viewer. Where I lived was about 60 miles
outside the path of totality. We saw a partial eclipse; something over 90%.
I sort of "remember" the reason I watched it from home was because I was
too young
Don't know how I'll take a photo through the welding mask, but as soon
as the filter comes in, I'll take some practice photos; compare them to
the view through the mask & let y'all know what I think.
I probably should clean the glass on my welding mask while I'm waiting.

I have to applaud Halley (of Halley's comet fame) for the incredible
insight into how this could be used to determine the distance from
earth to sun.

I used a similar setup a few years back during the transit of Venus.
It was an amazing thing to see.

I've heard that in a pinch, welding masks work great for watching
solar eclipses and sunspots.

I wonder how similar the filters are to the glass used in welding masks?
Optical clarity probably isn't as important for welding masks.

My local Pentax dealer also sells telescopes,
Is the lens the A* 300 2.8? I have the same lens and need a solar
filter like this.

Update on my preparations (if anyone is interested).
Stopped by my local Pentax dealer here in Raleigh.
I got a Manfrotto 700RC2 fluid head that will take my existing mounting
plates for my 3021 legs.
He ordered an Astrozap AZ-1514 Glass full aperture Solar Filter to fit

I said a few months ago, so I figure there's only one November 11 within the
past few months. Then there is the detail that Flickr shows the date, plus I
embed the date in the names of the files and the album. You're a bright lass, I

I was kind of going for the YEAR. But I guess that was too much to ask for.

I've been thinking about this for a couple of years now. I already had
the NASA sites bookmarked.
I looked at the Nikon & MrEclipse sites Igor suggested, but neither of
them answer my question about what *focal length* will give me the best
results, which in turn determines which lens I'm going
I don't have any previous experience photographing a solar ECLIPSE,
but I'm about to get into serious planning mode for the upcoming one

crosses 1 mile north of my workplace. I plan on taking the day off and

John,
First of all, thank you for bringing attention to this event.
Even though we will get only a partial one, it is a great experience for
the kids. I just marked the calendar.
I would assume you want to use a long telephoto lens (for the moon).
But if you google for e.g. "photographing
John, I am sure that someone knows the answer to your question. I don’t. But I
wanted to remind you of the old landscapers’ maxim: look behind you.
More specifically, when photographing the eclipse using the ideal lens and
filters, don’t forget to look at the ground. Way back I was in Indiana
The Great Solar Eclipse is coming to the U.S. in August. Does anyone on
the list have prior experience photographing eclipses?
I'm planning to use my K-1 & K-3, but I'm wondering which lenses would
be my best choices?
