The F-104 was a "cool" looking aircraft. It earned it reputation,
however, as the "lead sled." When the F-4 came around, with mach 2
speed, longer endurance and better reliability, the F-104 faded into
the background.

You're right about the ejector seat, Mark. And John's right about it's low
level (in)capabilites.
It was designed as a high altitude, high speed fighter - bomber. It did that
very well setting numerous altitude, climbing and speed records.
