I'm pretty sure they went really cheep, (which isn't necessarily a bad thing), in the design phase, and it's just a modification of the optical design from the old 50 f 1.7 or 55 f 1.8 standard lenses.  I can't find an optical formula to compare to confirm that, but it seems to be a better
