Contact cleaner is not a good idea. Many of them include a lubricant. Doing
this job without disassembly is also not a good idea.

Here you can buy CRC contact cleaner in electronic supplies shops.

Yay!
Even after all of the warnings about lubrication/no lubrication,
disassemble/don't disassemble, etc you still had the nerve to go
ahead with it?

Well hell, if I sent it in for repair it was going to cost at least
$200. Might as well try the simple fix first. At worst I'd have to
wait a couple of weeks to find out it was unrepairable than look into
used Ds/Ds2, (at maybe a cost of $300 if was lucky), or saving my
pennies for a K10D

Not pop the top and hit it with some Radio Shack contact cleaner?
Gently, of course, so you don't fill the entire camera with the

Find a real electronics or industrial supply store, and ask them for

Well, if it were under warranty it would be a no brainer. I've had the
poor thing for almost two years now and I have it on manual a lot so it
gets quite a work out. In fact I justed checked and the first shot I
made with it is dated 12-21-2005. I's been trouble free until now so I

Mine did that really bad.
Since it was still under warranty just I sent it in.

The color one was designed to assure that the colors wouldn't fade or run.

Color used to be lubricated IIRC. I'm not sure that's called for here.
They used to sell something we called tuner cleaner, (which wasn't it's
actual name, but wasn't the color contact cleaner), I used to clean up
the brushed aluminum front panels on stereo components really nicely.

The last can of Radio Shack cleaner I got left an oily

Mine too. Still might be OK if you could be sure that the contacts
for the thumbwheel is/are the only thing which get touched by the stuff.

its different every time you go into the store.

Well now they have contact cleaner and tuner cleaner, (the tuner cleaner
has lube the contact doesn't), I didn't recognize the primary chemical
agent in the contact cleaner, didn't think to write it down, and I'm
trying to find it's formula on line to see what it might do the plastic.

Talked to the guy at Pentax Canada. He had me do a reset on the custom

This is the kind of thing which makes the film + mechanical (or

Maybe you can't do too much with them (I mean technological capability

It was suggested that you leave them at the top of the dam and not
take them on the tour.
Another problem has arisen with my *ist-DS.
This afternoon the autofocus stopped working for no apparent reason.
I tried using two other lenses to ensure that it was a problem
with the body and not the specific lens. None of the lenses would
autofocus.
I verified that the camera was indeed in
