Popular Photo found the lens to be very fine but they noted than at
28mm its vignetting was caused, they tought, by a circle not wide
enough for 24X36. Don't know it this makes sense. Maybe someone
could check out the exact words they used.

The scuttlebutt hearsay on this lens is that they are prone to
element separation due to some quality control issues in assembly.
That said, if you got a good one, the other scuttlebutt I've heard is
that a good one is superb. For a one-stop light loss compared to the
f/2.8 model, I'd much
It's a great lens, until the composite,(glassplastic) aspheric element
in the rear of the lens seperates. Then it's horrible. There are no
spare parts available and the seperation is a matter of time, mine did
while sitting on a shelf for three months. I've seen a few on sale on
e-Bay
Not a quality control problem, it's a design flaw.

I have a couple of these lenses. I bought the first one second-hand, for
use with studio flash, since it has a constant aperture, making exposures
very straightforward. It soon became my daily lens (in preference to the
28-200 f3.8-5.6), so I bought a second one, new this time, to be sure I'd
