I have the 2012 mini with 2.6Ghz i7 quad-core, 16G RAM, and 1T SSD fitted
internally. I keep 300-400G free space on it; all my data and my accounts are
stored on fast external drives (USB3 or Thunderbolt connections). It's a very
fast little machine this way.

A few years back, I bought a 2012 Mac Mini with a 1.1 TB fusion drive.
Disks get full, performance drops, and pretty soon a young man's fancy
turns to solid state drives. A bit of research and I find that I can
pick up a 2TB samsung evo for $585. A
My guess is that it's there to keep the time when there's no power.
