Huzzah!
Deleting the p-list seems to have done the trick. I now have the correct
tallies of photos, and my keywords are back!
Thanks very much Godfrey, and all the others who chimed in.

Even dealing with the Kodak Labs in Fair Lawn was more fun dealing with
these computer problems.

Yeah sure. Blame it on autocorrect.

I don't know that he does need all that, but if I was worried about possibly
screwing up my system I'd want a backup from which to restore it to the state it
was in before I began mucking about with it.
And if I was worried about corrupting data that I had saved, I'd make a copy of
that data

Godders, the plist idea is great. I’ve had those things cause trouble

Larry, I have a 500 gb SDD in the computer. My photos are on a 2 tb
external. I have Time Machine backups to a 4 tb drive and a 2 tb, and to
Backblaze.

Uninstalling it and installing a fresh copy should fix it just fine without

Thanks much, Godfrey. I’ll give it a try (post Xmas) and let you know how it

I don't know how big your hard drive is, but with external drives down
under $40/TB this might be a good time to buy an external drive and
copy your applications

Again: your image files are all there, right? :-)
The Lightroom application executable is independent of the catalog (.LRCAT)
file. I'd uninstall LR6 and then install it afresh. It sounds like something
has trashed the Lightroom application itself.
Install LR fresh after uninstalling the
Could you do an image backup of your hard drive right now before doing whatever
you have to do to decompress the older backup?
Maybe make a copy of the older backup and decompress from that.
That way you'd have the status quo ante to return to if it somehow screws up
Lightroom and/or you
Today I restarted the computer again, running fsck in the Unix shell on the
way. No problems.
Since the image counts and keywords are missing even in almost-2-year-old
copies of the catalog, it seems it must be a mutation in Lightroom itself.
My backups include LR6. Would I be inviting further
Well, I just went into my extensive backups and opened several .LRCAT files
going back to Feb 2017.
They don’t show the numbers of photos in the folders, and they don’t have
visible or searchable keywords.
I’m utterly flummoxed.
Any other suggestions?
