Sounds like a battery problem. Speeds 1/125 an above will function
mechanically. Probably the battery is down to the point it will still
run the meter, but will not run the shutter.

Shutter works fine at slow speeds in Manual mode. Doesn't in
Automatic(Av). New Batteries
I'm having some trouble with my LX in Av mode. Whenever it meters a
shutter speed of 1/125 or below it will open the shutter for an
unusually long time (like 1/2 second or longer). It seems to work fine
with faster shutter speeds (1/250 and above, metered), and works fine
when not in Av mode
Sounds like the battery is dead.

Am I in for a CLA, or is there something I've missed?
YES. You do not have film in the camera!

Hehehe,
It happens to all of us (And needless to say, that was my first guess too)

Yep, and it's trying to make a perfect exposure off
that nice, black, pressure plate! ;-)

If it doesn't work on auto with film in the camera but works in manual only,
then it is a switch (or something) that needs to be
CLA is what it sounds like to me. Good luck finding a qualified repair
person to even look at it who's not a Pentax employee.

I've been told by independent repair places that they won't touch the LX
because Pentax wouldn't give them repair manuals or parts. I don't know
if this is true or not, but the repair guys wouldn't touch them. They
were perfectly willing to break my MXs though.
