Get a cheap USB housing for a SATA drive & use it as external storage.
Something like:

Install a copy of MacDrive on the PC & you probably wouldn't even have
to reformat the drive.

Yeah I've thought

I have an update.
I haven't tried the G5 again since the last time I posted as I decided it was
getting a bit futile.
Instead I had a brainwave and ended up ordering a cheap Firewire card for my
ancient PC - the one that the G5 replaced! It's scanning a slide right now.
The card cost me $25
There may be some third party shops that will still repair a PowerPC,
but I don't think you can get any repair work from Apple. For David's
sake, I would be very happy to be proved wrong.

Thanks John, that is the same guide I used yesterday :) It's a real pain to
get out but not as bad as if I'd had a dual-processor model.
I had a go at removing the motherboard this morning and that's even worse - I
eventually gave up on it.

Thanks for supplying those links.
I'm not able to access the pins while it's plugged in and I'm a bit reluctant
to run it disconnected as switchmode power supplies tend to need some load to
operate correctly. And with the plugs out it probably won't switch on as the
soft-power switch is out on

parts for a DIY.
About a year ago my wife's 2007 iMac blew out its supply. I priced a
replacement from OWC or similar and I was all set to order it and open
that iMac up (very tricky little buggers), but on a whim we dragged it
I'm a PC guy, so I don't know much about Macs, especially the PowerMac,
but I did a quick search & I think a replacement power supply should be
available fairly cheaply if that's what is wrong with it.
I also found a page devoted to how to get the power supply out:

Not easily - I have the equipment but the connections are pretty well covered.
I might have a closer look at it later today. I also want to check out any
caps that I can find on the main board.

Links below to tables of the pin-out voltages on the G5 power supply.
Should be able to check these with a good high impedance volt meter.

Do you have any way to actually check for voltages coming out of the
power supply?

Thanks Zos, you're pretty much saying what I thought.
I took the power supply out earlier today and had a look to see if any caps (or
anything at all) had suffered obvious failures but it looked pretty good.
Minimal dust, too but I vacuumed it out, gave things a wiggle and put it all
back toge
It should start up with a bad battery. Your power supply is most like
dead or the caps on the board have failed.

Hi all,
I started up my old G5 to do some slide scanning today but it seems to be on
the blink. At first I had some strange problems communicating with the scanner
but it came right and I got a couple of scans done.
I left the machine to idle while I had lunch but when I came back it had froze
