Thanks, Mark—those links were really helpful. Given the importance of live
view when shooting with a DSLR, converting my k7 seems like a better
option—especially if working in urban areas. The k-5 is my back-up to the k-3,
so I wouldn’t use it, but the k-7 I could and the extra advantage
Oh - I think I misunderstood your comment.
My old K10D stopped working with lenses in auto mode. The camera will
not stop them down. It will work with lenses in manual mode (I.e. using
the aperture ring - no A setting) - using stop down metering. The auto
focus works fine, the auto metering /

Is it something in the IR conversion process that disables auto-focus?

It does not disable the auto focus. However, with a DSLR, when not using
live view, the focusing is based on visible light which is somewhat
different from visible light. My understanding is that with off the
sensor focusing (compact, mirrorless or DSLR in live view mode) the
focusing is based
I'm intrigued by the IR conversion, too... I have an *ist-d or a k-7 I'd
consider converting... Any thoughts on which is the better candidate?

If your *istD is anything like my *istDS it has some IR capability even
in its original unmodified form. Not fast enough for handheld shots but
Thanks for the link, Mark! I just may convert my k-10D. This idea gets a
serious think. He seems like a nice guy. Read is bio etc.
Might be fun to do Urban IR.
And nice test shots by the way!

I really liked the IR converted K10D but I'm seeing some interesting
things with this converted compact camera. With the K10D exposure was
always a crap shoot - which is what you'd expect since the meter is
still based on visible light, not IR. The exposure discrepancies were
not trivial -
With my IR converted K10D only working with manual lenses, I decided to
convert another camera for IR use. Sent my old Nikon P6000 in for the
process. While this is a very flawed camera in terms of poorly
implemented features, it takes good photos and produces a pretty robust
13.5 MP file. The
