Thanks to all for the help with this image.
I think this final rendering (see link below) is about as good as I'm going to
get. Basically I've nudged the mid tones a bit and then desaturated both RGB
and red slightly. This also has the effect of lessening the intense orange
colour.

Like #3. To my mind it's a more accurate rust color. I think #2 B&W is
the better of the two, but I relate more to the color version because
of the rust.

The contrast in the second conversion is still a bit high for my
tastes. It really doesn't need that much. Still it is an improvement.

I still prefer the original Brian.
It's got a very strong Outback feel to it.
