After reading the whole thread, let me hake a suggestion.
Larry's Hyperfocal Distance by using the scale on the lens isn't bad,
but you might want to combine a flash with this to light the flakes.
This will make them stand-out.

I agree. While we had almost two inches at home (New Jersey) there
was only a brief and light show shower in the city. That made it
easier to grab a cab, but harder to grab an image of the falling snow.

Yes, it's a 6x6 articulated vehicle. Semi amphibious. A friend of mine
managed to sink one in the middle of a river in Germany in the '80's.
It would be fun but being a military vehicle, it's not exactly a fuel
sipper.
