They are both certainly amoung the sharper, contrastier lenses I ave

Wide opened, the 77 beats my 85/1.8D, and overall the 77 has more '3D'
look than the Nikon. So the 77 is harsh for portrait, but superb in
general.

Perhaps I should clarify. By "soft" I did not mean less sharp, but the
"milky" appearance. I don't know the proper way/word to describe it though.

Some of my Nikons are too contrasty, so I know what you meant :)
Sometimes that's how Nikon got that 'very sharp' look, but when I
scanned the film, the resolution is somewhat disappointing - but does
not apply to all of them, though.
I used Nikon for 6 yrs before the first Pentax, and I found P
