Well, just outside of town here, my Tom Tom Navigator 5.0 software on the pocket pc tells me to take a sharp right in 80 yards. If I do that I drive into a mountain. The thing is that the road was under construction when the GPS van went through and there was a detour from one side of of the ro

I believe that if you go a bit upscale on the car rental you get a gps in the vehicle these days. But don't take my word for it I have not been able to afford to rent a car in the past 10 years or so. I do not imagine that buying a GPS loaded with NA maps is an attractive idea to a guy from OZ

Bill - The Google route looks pretty good for the midwest. Your first bottleneck will be Minneapolis/St Paul, but if you hit it in the middle of the day you should be OK - avoid morning and evening rush hour. You can avoid Chicago altogether by taking I-39 from Rockford, IL down to Bloomingt
