Trying a loupe, rather than relying on tests and other commentary, would
be ideal, just as trying a lens before purchasing it. But you're right,
it's not every camera shop that's going to carry an assortment of loupes

No way. I tried the 5.5X Pentax too. It was good, but not as well as the
Schneider 4X MC.

Recently a friend, who has the Schneider, compared it to the Pentax 5.5X

To inspect the sharpness, I recommend 8X or 10X. For full frame viewing
(more for enjoyment), 4X is more po
Cheap ones are no good. I used a Peak 8X before. Terrible (low
contrast, distortion, foggy, you name it.) You ought to consider
a Pentax or Schneider, or use your fast 50mm lens turned over and
with aperture fully open: makes better loupe than Schneider --
