I don't know how JCO uses his lenses if he's wearing out the focusing
rings. I have a lens or two still from my Nikon days that I bought
used in 1981. They were used to make many thousands of pictures for

Try them with gloves in -20C weather. The metal gets slick, the rubber
less so.

I prefer a good rubber ring as it's easier to grip with gloves and in
other adverse conditions. The knurled rings slip, although they do feel
more solid.

The 35/3.5 Super Tak is superb as well, but it doesn't have the
latest coatings that the Super-Multi-Coated or SMC K versions boast..
Any SMC or Super-Multi-Coated Takumar is a superb lens. Wonderful on
a Spotmatic, Spotmatic F, ES or ES2. Nice on a "D" as well with stop
down metering. Whic

Correction. This one is Super Multi-Coated. So I
Never really liked this style of knurled control ring much. It is
identical to the original Nikkors that my Nikon F came with. I prefer
the knurled control rings on the Nikkor AI-S lenses, and think
they're nicer looking.
But this is just a matter of aesthetics and does not influence

Any Super-Multi-Coated Takumar will have the latest optics and open
aperture capability. The rubber ring versions aren't superior.

Super Takumar and earlier lenses have those rings, some SMC takumars
have them as well.
Pentax (And everybody else) stopped making them because rubber rings
have a more positive grip and are cheaper to make.
