I had a motor drive MX that sometimes slipped on ONE of my
MXen. I never figured out why--I just put the drive on the
other MX. Clearly the camera was the issue.
When my Super Programs got motor-drive-death, the symptom was that
they would stop winding towards the end of the roll and the light

FWIW,
With winder # 1321682 if the winder is ON, pressing the winder
trigger will turn the metering on (and shoot a frame if you press hard
enough) regardless of whether or not the camera is turned on. I tried
this on five different MXs and they all worked the same way.
The MX
Well my winder works like Lon said. Serial No. 129. Like the cameras
themselves I think the newer winders have a lower serial number range
than the earlier one.

My winder has a sticker on the left side (opposite the grip)
on the surface that mates with the camera. It says:
Asahi
Pentax
Winder MX

I'm glad GreyWolf corroborated my experience. Newer winder, or older one?

Hmmm... my winder was purchased from a shop specializing in repairs,
and was used by the guy who owned it. Maybe he made mods to the winder.
My winder will not activate the meter if the winder itself is off.

Nope. I did a test before I posted. This is what happens
in my hands with my equipment. That's my story and I'm
sticking with it. BTW, the MX used was the older (metal
film holder) version.

No, Lon, yours has not been modified. I believe there were unannouced
changes made over the years of production. Pentax has done that often in
the past. This is one of those things where one can only talk about my
winder, and not 'the winders (grin).

Well you answered my question, I think. That is unless someone else has
a MX winder that works like yours.

That's not how the manual says it should work, or for that matter the way
either of my winders works on any of my MX's. Camera or Winder off or on
press halfway down on the Winder release and the meter turns on.

AFIK the behavior you describe is correct. Lon is wrong.

Normal ?
It's a major risk to drain battery !
The Winder ME II don't do this.

In a word... Yes.
