as far as I´ve understood from reading elsewhere, a seme is, in semantics, the smallest carrier of a meaning in a word. To widen the meaning of seme towards semiotics, might mean, that it is the smallest carrier of meaning of a sign which may be non symbolical (not language) as well. So, if
Supplement: Of course it is horribly false to say that the rose talked about is a seme (the subject that is meant), but the word "rose", uttered by Gertrude Stein is (the subject of the sentence). A rose is a rose, but a subject is not necessarily a subject.
