The use of cluster bombs in a city would be devastating. All this talk about
precision and smart bombs but in Basra obviously the situation is quite
different. It may be UK bombers that are involved. Cluster bombs spread
bomblets over a wide area that explode sending shrapnel in all directions
It seems as if not only cluster bombs but also napalm is being used. The US
is just adding to the amount of unexploded mines in effect that litter
Afghanistan. Casualties will continue long after the conflict ends.
Collateral damage that will continue infefinitely...

BBC World Service have said that the US military have made a broadcast telling
the people in Afghanistan not to mistake cluster bombs for food packages. Both
are the same colour -yellow.

News media reports last week that 50 percent of the weapons fired at
Iraqi military installations missed their so-called aimpoints

While cluster bombs are not specifically banned under
international conventions, landmines are. However the US together
with Turkey refuse to sign on to the convention. However, the
indicscriminate use of weapons is forbidden as well as the use of
indiscriminate weapons.
The failure rate
I have been searching the net in vain to find any site that
discusses DU reinforced shells and cluster bombs as banned
weapons. There are many sites that discuss DU and even some that
discuss cluster bombs and some say that they are banned, but none
give a reference to verify this.. A few posts
