well, the good news is i got a clean 5.6 install (i removed lib/perl5)
and then i installed an older event 0.62 which i had around. it builds
and runs fine with stem. so since then, there is something that solaris
2.6 and perl 5.6 don't like with event 0.74. i don't know which versions
between 62
