Okay, okay, I get it [1]. But DMMG still does cool stuff that is
currently an unreasonable amount of work
This isn't currently used anywhere. Is there some case where it would
be needed (rather than by calling SNESComputeFunction as is currently
done)?

Agreed there could/should be places to store functions, but it
ain't DMMG.
