I'm guessing by the "postmaster.exe" that this is on Windows.
In that case, find "PostgreSQL X.Y" in Control Panel>Administrative
Tools>Services (where X.Y is your major.minor version number of Postgres.)
Change the services' start-up type to "Manual" (so you can start it
yourself when needed.)
Hi all! I have windows XP professional 2003. Yesterday evening I
installed, while turning off my pc, some updates of the os and this
morning the database server does not start!! May some have a trick to
help me? I fund something on the web but too unspecific...

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "starting a standalone
postgres session and using it to recreate your SQL users". Do you mean
running initdb on a new data directory and then trying to create new users?
I'm fairly certain we already tried that. Since
Simon, you're right on the money.. the guys on the IRC chatroom suggested
that I cast the partitioning column as SMALLINT as the optimizer assumed
Integer and it worked. Thx for getting back to me

Why not just have a primary key with 2 columns, one of which is a
serial and the other is a "siteid" or "installid" that is different for
each server?
