It seems like the low temp on the heat guns would be as hot as the hair
dryer and speed up the time however, one wouldn't want to exceed 500 to 750
at most.
I didn't realize that say, 600 would melt lead.

I have one that heats to 600 degrees... you can damage stuff with it and
heating governor balls with one might cause them to melt, not to mention that
lead fumes are not great for your health. That holds true for old lead paint,
as well.

Hello all
I used conglomerations of these methods and got the screws out of the weights
with no damage, and installed the new springs. I hate having to do that job
with that governor collar in the way!
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions, that's the great thing about this

Just to compare, I looked on E-bay after Steve's source got my curiosity. It
seems they heat up to 500 to 1200 degrees?
How hot does a hair dryer get to compare.
Your story supports my concern as I would hate to start some grease, oil, or

Bob,
Sometimes slow and deliberate is the best way. Especially when working with
valuable antiques.
I once used a heat gun on an antique dresser handed down through my Family

Examples of heat guns, we use them at work for work with wiring. Below are
Harbor Freight models. They operate like a hair dryer but are much hotter and
you can control the heat by the louver on the side.

Nick & Melissa's method works well, and as she notes correct size is
important. Naturally, it also makes it easier if you anchor the
adjoining part (the weight in this case) in a vise. A piece of belt
leather wrapped around the anchored part helps prevent scarring.
I don't generally apply
A heat gun can be purchased at hardware stores and is used for stripping
paint among other things. They have a higher heat output than a hair dryer
and can cause damage or start a fire if not used properly.

A precision-fitting hollow ground screwdriver will solve most stubborn
screw problems at the outset and save burring the screw slot as well.

Thanks Melissa and Nick! Luckily the screw head is fairly deep, not like those
danged screws on the back of a Victrola no. 2 reproducer. I always manage to
wreck one of the four!!

Spray them with a rust dissolver or soak the whole thing in kerosene for a few
hours. Then, make sure you use the correct screwdriver... a gun screwdriver set
or micro screwdriver set is best. To get some extra torque on the screw, use
vise grips fastened to the screwdriver shaft using one hand
Sometimes you can get the spring to move a bit by grasping the weight and
turning the spring. This usually frees up the screw too.

Hi John,
Nick and I have had great success getting those stubborn screws out with this
easy method. Use the correct size screwdriver which is quite small. Attach a
pair of vise-grips to the screwdriver handle and use the grips to turn the
screwdriver as you apply pressure. It works every time fo

Hello all
I need to replace the governor springs on a Victor II. I have removed the
weights and springs from the shaft, but the small screws that connect the
weight to the springs will not budge. What do you all recommend to get them
loose? They are really tight and I don't want to strip the scr
