I'm also using nagios in my system. As with most open source
applications, it will take some time to configure and customize. But
after you finished customization, you can forget about it.
You might want to try some of these frontends. I still don't have time
to try them out. Maybe

Nagios is pretty straightforward and your favorite distro might have
already packaged it so installation would make it work out of the box.
However, you will still have to do your configuration scripts to make
the plugins work. Simple ones like Ping and SMTP/POP3 check are not
difficult at all as
