Nope didn't make it to the clinic and no I had not figured out just how
simple this part of the fix was. My grub cfg has been tweaked and tested.
Yea so next time this happens ( optimistic aren't I ) it should be much
easier to recover from.

I have never had reliably good luck installing XFCE LXDE or KDE on top
of the basic Gnome or Unity Ubuntu. Going all the way back to at least
Ubuntu 9.04 KDE in particular seems to corrupt something in Gnome fonts
while its own fonts are clearly screwed up versus a Kubuntu Mint or
Mepis KDE in
May I suggest using Unetbootin (http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/), zap
your USB to FAT using fdisk as that for me seemed to work best and then
download your .iso and open up Unetbootin and burn the iso to the USB
stick, it will do all the work for you. I have successfully used this for
