A year or so ago I had the same problem. It turned out to be a failed DVI
port on the motherboard. I disconnected that cable, installed a VGA cable,
reset the monitor and it's been working

port. That is all that I have ever used, and the cable has not been
moved. The problem of fat icons I assumed was due to a decreased

port, you will not see anything. This has nothing to do with your computer.
Use the "Input" or "Source" button on your monitor to select the VGA input.
