I'm assuming that you have cleared the shamefully small memory buffers in the
modem by unplugging it, waiting a full minute, and then plugging it back in?

I would think a dynamic IP would preclude the being of a DNS server, as if the
servers IP were to change, no one could find the DNS anymore.
Or am I missing something here?

Not sure you can, as the file system is being accessed, so autofs will keep it
mounted.
Historically, it's bad practice to export remote file systems. It can cause bad
things when the remote source is not available.

Add a 3 to the boot command in grub or lilo to boot to text mode. Then you can
make adjustments to you X config.
Alternatively, you could try to get to text mode by pressing ALT-f(1-6) to go
to those consoles.

F2 should take you to the BIOS, but F12 should ask you what device to boot from.
I use F12 as this is a 'just for this boot' type thing.
