In the past, when I have had tough problems like yours, I have found solutions on the IRC channel. http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/chat By the way, I upgraded ubuntu (gnome) from 9.10 to 10.04 on my Toshiba laptop. My laptop does not have NVIDIA graphics, however. I used the release CD.
