Okay, cool.
Dad got a new laptop, I installed that Adeona thing and created a strong
password for it. It is working just fine, and I am very impressed.

I see a few things to be concerned with here:
1) GMail expects you to use it's built-in spam detection (it's a lot more
expansive than what LK described, BTW). Building your own spam detection net
via filters is likely to result in a lot of bad effects.
2) Filters have nothing to do with SPAM,
