Back in the 90's I was in your same position. What I did was to
load Linux on my main computer and use it exclusively. Depending on what

I personally would probably run Ubuntu whatever dis you use i would
look at security and uninstalling anything you don't need. maybe even
running a lighter window manager than KDE.

welcome. To combine what the other two replies are telling you its to
decide what you want to do, and with the help of Google and some from
us when you get stuck just kind of jump in with both feet.
I learned a great deal running a gentoo install from stage 1, and they
are really well documented.
Thank you for all of your replies - I will be installing *one* of the
Linux's I have available and jumping in.
I will also be checking out the link provided and re-educate myself on basic
installation procedures (Like Firefox) so it can become my main machine.

and finding out basic starting programs for replicating what you might
have been use to in windows.

some excellent books and you can get most of them free and then buy

ones you like best. Also, Eric is right that the Installfest could be very
interesting for you given the people you can talk to there.
When I first started w/ Linux and FreeBSD, I loved the book Using
Unix Third Edition, Special Edition ISBN # 0-7897-1747-6 by Peter
Kuo. There is still a lot of relevant basics in there, along with a
lot of outdated stuff.
