I met the people behind zareason at lindependence in CA, and they are
quality people for Linux. Ubuntu is their preferred distro and they seem
to feed back into the community. I originally heard about them when I
was looking for a someone to sell me a MythTV turnkey setup. Not sure if

Interesting, it's good to hear someone who's dealt with them. I just
thought it was an interesting advertisement.
My thing is, if it runs Ubuntu then there's a pretty good chance I
could blast the drive and toss Slackware/Debian/Gentoo/CentOS/insert
other distribution on to suit my tastes...
Stephen,
Im not knocking them personally. I find it commendable that they plainly
state their return policy, which unfortunately many vendors like them do
not.
There are some 'macro' problems with these kind of vendors which makes it
very hard for them to compete against the likes of
I honestly don't think a $299 straight-up system is ever competing
with Dell since they are geared towards people who don't want to touch
the insides of the their computer.

I didn't think 15% restock fee was out of line at all.

It boils down to being unfamiliar with Linux in this position, which
means you should buy a Windows machine with those questions.

I thought the goal was free software for the masses.

Novell has re-upped
easy to install KDE 3.5.9 which I
did and I'm now running. I, too, use Ubuntu because of the support and the
amount of packages available.

I meant between Ubuntu and RHEL/CentOS. The only reason I put RHEL
and CentOS together is because CentOS is pretty much RHEL without the
name breaking copyrights.

Pretty much if RHEL does it, CentOS does it, so hardware compatibility
and service level is equal.
Okay, so Ubuntu sounds like it was started as a desktop distribution
geared towards eye candy. Thanks for sharing, I appreciate it.

I would say it a little differently.
OH wow, a totally different world for me, then...

And on that road, I figure I'll share something I ran across in my

A $299 Ubuntu computer...
2ghz cpu, 1gb ram, 160gb sata drive, nvidia 6100 video card, etc..
figured I'd share.

Buying from these small dealers can be a total nightmare. I took a look
at their return policy:
If you get it and decide that it's just too different from Windows or Mac
for your liking (or for any reason) feel free to return it within 30 days
for a refund. Note that there is a 15%
strong
support, good reputation and my preference for KDE. I downloaded the
community supported version of 8.04 that has KDE 4 as the default
desktop. I'm curious as to it's stability. If you have experience
with KDE 4, especially on Kubuntu, please share with all of us. Has

wish to go back to KDE 3.x? Why or why not?
I started with Kubuntu, and moved to Ubuntu. There are far more Ubuntu
users and the packages, etc
aboard!
