After installing the latest version of kubuntu on my thinkpad, it started out working fairly well, but performance gradually deteriorated horribly. I've tried every "fix" I could find on the net, but every time I get something fixed, something else goes haywire. Many things to like about kubuntu

A runaway task would be my guess as well (Ctrl + ESC is your friend). I've installed the lastest kubuntu on many machines and I've had the opposite results. KDE just keeps getting faster and faster with every new release including 4.9 which has a very noticable speed increase. Was this a fres

Thanks for the very helpful responses. Can't believe that I had never heard of CTRL+ESC before. That was very revealing, though I don't know which items in that list I could safely remove/kill/delete. Is there some way to save a copy of that list to a text file? My system is a Thinkpad with 1.8

Thanks Matt. All very helpful. I finally did find and fix the problem with Firefox, and that has also solved a runaway process (for which Brian provided the clue). It seems I had a tiny script in /home/joe/bin from ages ago that was using upwards of 75% of the processor power, and deleting that
