specify the keyboard shortcut to switch the language (layout).
If you are confortable with an indscript layout, and you are using
gnome, you can just add the keyboard layout applet to the panel. I
think you
haven't put
any restrictions on the competitors being Linux users or programmers in
general.

resolution (the changes are visible immediately) and saved your
changes?
Also, do lspci and see whether the nvidia card is getting detected. If
it isn't check for hardware problems.
