Sorry, I do appreciate the help.
Rather than mess around with SS 6.5.4 anymore, I've installed the beta
of Squeezecenter 7.0 and the corresponding IR Blaster plugin to see if
that solves the problem.
If nothing else, at least Squeezecenter 7.0 tells you exactly where the
log files are kept.

looks like I answered my own question there :-)
Worth leaving this here in case anyone Google's with same problem.
My Primary DNS was set to 0.0.0.0 -- obviously should have been
