I'm convinced Port 5123 "listen" is failing. So you need to check the
error code from socket initialisation - I suggest add lines in red in
Plugin.pm and restart LMS making sure plugin.shairplug logging is set to
DEBUG and for startup

I will run another scan and make note of the time on on log and time
during scan. I will not play any music for the duration of the scan and
see what happens

Well, tired of hitting my head against a brick wall I finally took the
plunge and updated my system. Rather than sticking with Ubuntu I've
reinstalled the operating system, choosing Lubuntu (14.04) because of
its much smaller footprint. I also
