It's quite stable, but having said that, it is beta so you may have
problems that other people aren't having, and if you do, you should be
prepared to either revert, or help someone to help you get it running!

/etc/heyu/x10.conf to the heyu config file in my user's home directory.

I set serial port permissions to allow everyone:-

There was an issue with the BBC having changed the layout of the Listen
Again page. There was a fix for it, but I'm not sure if it's in the
beta yet.

I think the BBC have changed the format for that page and the AlienBBC
parser can't understand it any more.
I'm pretty sure the AlienBBC guys are aware of this, but I'm not sure
whether they'll fix it in 1.06 or require you to update to 2.00 in due
course.

The ubuntu (debian) install doesn't have a ../slimserver/server
directory - the Plugins directory has always been ../slimserver/Plugins
Would it also require a ../slimserver/server/Bin directory too?

I normally do a 'chown -Rf slimserver:slimserver' on the slimserver dir
after untarring AlienBBC, but this time I only did it on Plugins.
If it's possible to create the tar with all files owned by
slimserver:slimserver that would make it simpler.

Not sure who Dan is - Triode is Adrian AFAIK.
It's not just Firewall s/w that can cause problems, Anti-virus s/w has
been known to too. You're not using NOD32 are you? If so you need to
tell it that socketwrapper.exe is not a threat.
